Boston Flute Academy hosted its first-ever Open House on Sunday, November 7, featuring a recital and masterclass event with New York-based composer and flutist Robert Dick. In addition to an evening recital, Mr. Dick coached two open masterclasses with flute students from the BFA Young Artist, Conservatory, and Repertory Programs.
The recital program saluted the music of composers who were also active flutists, highlighting their compositions for the instrument. It featured works by Mr. Dick, Katherine Hoover, Gary Schocker (Boston premiere), Theobald Boehm, Paul Taffanel, and BFA’s own Zach Sheets (premier). The program featured solo performances by Mr. Dick and BFA Young Artists Mayuko Akimoto, Emma Huelskamp, Catherine Jones, Jiweon Ryu, and Mr. Sheets.
The Open House also featured open classes, highlighting BFA’s Adult Ensemble and Seminar Program, Orchestral Class, Repertory Ensemble and Seminary Program, and Art of Listening Class. A number of flute-related exhibitors were also on-site with instruments, sheet music, and accessories for purchase.
