Flute students have a wide variety of opportunities to play in summer music programs throughout the world.  See below for a list of some possible camps, schools, and festivals for a range of ages, grade school and up.  Click here for our page of programs specifically for college students and older.

Ameropa International Chamber Music Festival

A 3-week program, starting with 1 week of solo preparation followed by a 2-week chamber music festival.  Multi-level.

Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music: Summer Chamber Music Workshop

Immersive summer training program for advanced, aspiring young musicians, working with distinguished professionals in the presence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  Various programs, including orchestra, piano, composition, wind ensemble, and instrument workshops.

Private lessons, masterclasses, and chamber music for serious students with advanced musical ability.  Programs for strings, woodwinds, horn, and composition.

Hartwick College Summer Music Festival and Institute

Interlochen Arts Camp

Various programs for grade school musicians, including both ensemble and individual training.  Junior Division open to musicians of all levels.  High School Division offers a wide range of programs for some of the world’s most talented students.

10-day program that features 4 private lessons, chamber ensembles, master classes, public performances by selected students, and concerts featuring performances by faculty and guest artists.

Jazz in July

Ages 15 and older
2-week jazz improvisation program for instrumental small combos and vocal jazz.  Includes opportunities for high school, college, and adult jazz musicians to take combined lectures, masterclasses, jam sessions, and performance sessions.

Jeffrey Khaner Flute Class
Philadelphia, PA
The Jeffrey Khaner Flute Class, from Tuesday, June 25 – Saturday, June 20, features interactive courses and master classes with Jeffrey Khaner, principal flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and courses with Mimi Stillman, founder of the Dolce Suono Ensemble. Sessions include warm-up classes, breathing techniques, and a Claude Debussy study. Student participants will play several times during the week in the master classes and receive individualized attention from Jeffrey Khaner. Due to the limited number of student spots available, participants can also audit. Auditors can enjoy the benefit of taking part in all courses and attending all master classes. All flutists are encouraged to apply.

National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute

4 weeks of private lessons, rehearsals, coaching by National Symphony Orchestra members, classes, and lectures to prepare aspiring musicians for their futures in music.

NEC Festival Youth Orchestra
New England Conservatory, Boston, MA
Ages 13-18
3-week full symphony orchestra program open to intermediate to advanced-level strings, brass, winds, piano, and percussion.  Emphasizes intensive musical preparation, with special focus on concentration, practice and performance techniques, interpretation, phrasing, and general musicianship.  Leads up to a final orchestral concert in NEC’s Jordan Hall.

NEC Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra
New England Conservatory, Boston, MA
Advanced high school-professional flutists
A unique ensemble opportunity for students and teachers at the intermediate and advanced levels.  This intensive weekend combines large ensemble and smaller select ensemble rehearsals, concluding with a final concert at NEC’s historic Jordan Hall.  Teachers are invited to participate with students in the large ensemble, and will be featured in the select ensemble.  Their studio participation is welcome.  University and conservatory music majors will be featured during one selection.  Director Paige Long will bring her unique flute collection, including her Kotato double contrabass flute, and will select flutists to use them during the weekend.  Teachers are eligible to receive MA educator Professional Development Points.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler offers young musicians an experience and education like no other, joining together the GRAMMY® and JUNO Award-winning VSO with Whistler, one of the world’s finest mountain resorts. Students will be immersed in a collaborative musical environment alongside and mentored by a world class symphony orchestra, under the direction of the VSO’s internationally acclaimed music director, Maestro Bramwell Tovey. Participation in the Whistler Institute Orchestra, chamber music, individual and group coachings, as well as a variety of unique performance opportunities will fill students’ warm summer days and cool, refreshing evenings in the mountains of beautiful British Columbia in Canada.

Young Artist Summer Program

The Young Artist Summer Program takes place Monday, July 8 – Friday, July 26. Young artists will experience conservatory-style living with a rigorous musical schedule and opportunities to perform with peers in an intimate, challenging, and supportive learning environment. This three-week course features personalized attention from top-tier faculty which includes Curtis faculty members, musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Curtis alumni with active solo and chamber music careers, and side by sides with Curtis Artist teachers drawn from the student body.
