Summer Music Programs (College Students and Older)

Flute students in colleges, universities, conservatories, and graduate schools (in addition to recent graduates) have a wide variety of opportunities to participate in summer music programs throughout the world.  See below for a list of some possible camps, schools, and festivals.

Atlantic Music Festival

Colorado College Summer Music Festival

High school seniors to graduate students (ages 16 and up)

An inspirational week of masterclasses, lectures and workshops with master artists Alberto Almarza, Jeanne Baxtresser, Soo-Kyung Park, Stephen Schultz and Jim Walker. Daily masterclasses will focus on standard repertoire and orchestral excerpts. Hot Springs Music Festival

College and up (talented pre-professional students working with professionals)
2-week festival that pairs mentor musicians from major orchestras, chamber ensembles, and conservatory faculties with talented pre-professional apprentices.  Both groups play side by side in orchestral, chamber, solo recital, vocal, choral, and chamber opera repertoire.  http://hotmusic.org/

IES Vienna Summer Music Program
Vienna, Austria
College students

Jeffrey Khaner Flute Class
Philadelphia, PA
The Jeffrey Khaner Flute Class, from June 23 – June 27, features interactive courses and master classes with Jeffrey Khaner, principal flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and courses with Mimi Stillman, founder of the Dolce Suono Ensemble. Sessions include warm-up classes, breathing techniques, and a Claude Debussy study. Student participants will play several times during the week in the master classes and receive individualized attention from Jeffrey Khaner. Due to the limited number of student spots available, participants can also audit. Auditors can enjoy the benefit of taking part in all courses and attending all master classes. All flutists are encouraged to apply.

Madeline Island Music Camp: Chamber Music for Winds Program
Madeline Island, WI
College and graduate wind players
1-week program in which woodwind and horn players take daily technique classes, coachings, and private lessons given by the members of the Prairie Winds ensemble.  Curriculum also includes instrument-free sessions and seminars.  http://www.music-camp.org/

NEC Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra
New England Conservatory, Boston, MA
Advanced high school-professional flutists
A unique ensemble opportunity for students and teachers at the intermediate and advanced levels.  This intensive weekend combines large ensemble and smaller select ensemble rehearsals, concluding with a final concert at NEC’s historic Jordan Hall.  Teachers are invited to participate with students in the large ensemble, and will be featured in the select ensemble.  Their studio participation is welcome.  University and conservatory music majors will be featured during one selection.  Director Paige Long will bring her unique flute collection, including her Kotato double contrabass flute, and will select flutists to use them during the weekend.  Teachers are eligible to receive MA educator Professional Development Points.  http://necmusic.edu/ce/metropolitan-flute-festival-orchestra

Texas Music Festival
Houston, TX
Ages 18-30
Hosted by the University of Houston, this orchestral training festival provides participants with orchestral playing opportunities, private lessons with Rice University faculty member Leone Buyse and Houston Symphony Orchestra principal flutist Aralee Dorough, chamber music coaching sessions, and a Young Artist Competition. The TMF provides all of its participants with full tuition fellowships (valued at around $4000) and provides participants from out of town with housing and meals. www.tmf.uh.edu

Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute

Young Artist Summer Program
Philadelphia, PA
The Young Artist Summer Program takes place July 7 – July 26. Young artists will experience conservatory-style living with a rigorous musical schedule and opportunities to perform with peers in an intimate, challenging, and supportive learning environment. This three-week course features personalized attention from top-tier faculty which includes Curtis faculty members, musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Curtis alumni with active solo and chamber music careers, and side by sides with Curtis Artist teachers drawn from the student body.
