Greg Pattillo's "Beatbox Flute 101" class

The Boston Flute Academy kicked off its 4th season hosting the PROJECT Trio, a passionate, high energy chamber music ensemble comprised of three virtuosic composer/performers from Brooklyn, NY in their first-ever Boston appearance.  The ensemble features Greg Pattillo (world-famous for pioneering the “beatbox flute” technique), cellist Eric Stephenson, and bassist Peter Seymour.

On Saturday, September 10, the ensemble led an improvisation masterclass with BFA students, and other flutists and string players from the greater Boston area.  They then performed an exciting, high-energy concert in front of a packed house, featuring their own compositions and unique arrangements.  The concert opened with performances by several top BFA flutists, mapping out a timeline of innovations in flute performance.  First, Nicholas Fitton performed Claude Debussy’s Syrinx for Solo Flute, in the traditional Western style.  Jinji Zhang followed with Ian Clarke’s “Great Train Race,” written in 1993 as a showpiece for “the flute as you don’t usually hear it!”  Finally, Brendan Dooley and Emma Huelskamp performed the Boston premiere of Pattillo’s most recent composition, “Three Beats for Beatbox Flute,” showcasing some of the latest sounds that young flutists are embracing for the future.

On Sunday, September 11, Pattillo was at the BFA again to teach a “Beatbox Flute 101” masterclass to both BFA students and other local flutists.

Thank you to PROJECT Trio for such an exciting start to the BFA’s 2011-2012 school year!
